2010 marks 100th anniversary of the death of that famous local aviator and fan of extreme sports, Charles Rolls. To celebrate the anniversary of the death of Charles Rolls there are many events throughout the year with links to Rolls and flight including classic Rolls Royce cars and 100 years of celebration and achievement, with pageants and art and science events, under the banner of Festival of Air.

We begin in February with the opening in Monmouth’s Nelson Museum of an exhibition to celebrate the life of Charles Rolls entitled “So- Why not!”. Apparently this was an expression used by Charles Rolls when somebody tried to tempt him to try out something different and usually risky. The exhibition rolls on until October.

Monmouth Women's Festival begins on 5th March for two weeks, but separate events are running on until September. The Border Steam and Counties Show puffs away on May 2nd. We have the Rolls Review, a light hearted celebration of the life of Charles Rolls beginning May 31st. and Rolls Royces feature at Penallt Classic Car Show on 4th July. There is a day of official events to commemorate the death of Charles Rolls on 12th July with a ceremony at our beautifully restored Shire Hall, a service at Llangattock Church and even a fly past by the Battle of Britain flight.

Internationally acclaimed Monmouth Festival of music begins on 23rd July for a week. Monmouth Carnival day on 25th. includes a magnificent display of 200 Rolls Royce cars at Monmouthshire Showground, followed by a Balloon Glow at the showground on Ist August. Events at the showground continue in August with Monmouthshire Show, the largest one day agricultural show in Wales on the 26th.

Monmouth 2010- the eventful year is more than a celebration of the life and achievements of Charles Rolls. We have a Wye Valley Baby Show, Monmouth raft race, a dragon boat race and many ways we can make your experience of Monmouth eventful from abseiling, canoeing, walking and cycling to travelling through our 1000 year history and providing places to rest, drink, eat and recuperate.
